Born at Durham, England, CoE. Enlisted 3 May 1915 age 26, an experienced clock and watch maker but a labourer at the time of enlistment. Nok mother, Elizabeth Brown, Beamish St, Durham, England. Embarked at Fremantle 5 June 1915 A2 Geelong. Served in the Middle East and hospitalised with illness August to October 1915. Shrapnel wounded to the right leg at Gallipoli 10 December 1915 and hospitalised at Alexandria and RTA per A71 Nestor 9 February 1916. Discharged 25 November 1916. Service medals: 1914-1915 Star, BWM and VM.
