Charlton, Ernest Alexander

Born on 3 February 1893 at Newcastle NSW, Methodist. Entered the Education Department on 1 February 1910 attending the Normal School (later Modern School) to bring his education up to the required entry standard. Monitor at Fremantle and North Fremantle in 1911 and in 1914 graduated from Claremont Teachers College. While teaching at Perth Boys School he was granted leave without pay and enlisted on 1 October 1916. His next of kin was Hannah Charlton, West Rd, West Guildford. Embarked at Fremantle on A34 Persic, 29 December 1916. Was wounded in France. RTA aboard Ypringa, (aka Piranga) November 1919 and discharged in February 1920. Entitled to BWM and VM. Resumed teaching and over the next 25 years was appointed a teacher at Thomas Street, Perth Boys, Boyanup and Yarloop. He was headmaster at East Claremont, Rivervale, Bunbury Swanbourne and finally Cottesloe Primary School from 1946 to his retirement in1958. Service medals: BWM and VM.
