Smith, Edward Albert

* 773 Sgt 28th Bn.

Born at Broken Hill, NSW, CoE.   Enlisted 16 March 1915 age 20, clerk. Nok mother, Margaret Smith of  Boreham St, Cottesloe, who gave written permission for him to enlist.  Embarked at Fremantle with the 28th Battalion 29 June 1915 per A11 Ascanius. Served in Gallipoli and then in France where he died 19 April 1916 of cerebral spinal meningitis at the 8th Casualty Clearing Station.  Buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord), France. Service medals: 1914-1915 Star, VM and BWM. Note: There are two cemeteries with the same name on the outskirts of Arras that are distinguished by East and West. East cemetery is apparently the most northerly of the two.
