Born 21 February 1898 in Toronto Canada, CoE. Enlisted 10 April 1916 age 18, postal assistant. Nok mother, Mrs Allen at Brighton St, Cottesloe. Embarked at Fremantle 30 October 1916 per A16 Port Melbourne and served in France and spent much of 1917-18 in hospitals. RTA per A67 Orsova January 1919 and discharged medically unfit on the 18 February 1920. Joseph’s father was born at Lurgan, Ireland and his mother at Liverpool, England. He attended school at Youanmi, in Western Australia and was employed at the local store for two and a half years. He unsuccessfully applied to re-enlist in the AIF in June 1919.
