Born at Lithgow NSW, Methodist. Enlisted 20 September 1915 age 30, gardener. Nok father deceased; brother Ernest Coates and later his uncle, Joseph Coates of Croyden, Forrest St. Cottesloe. Embarked at Fremantle 22 November 1915 per RMS Mongolia. In France in March 1916. Wounded in action in France on 26 August 1918. On 30 January 1918, at the Poole, Dorset Registrar’s Office, Herbert Coates married Annie Mary Elizabeth Cake, daughter of Jessie Charles Cake, postman. Bride and groom were residing at 9 King St, Poole. RTA per SS Konigin Luise June 1919. Service medals: 1914-1915 Star, BWM and VM.
