Hackfath, William Henry

DCM 2nd Lieut 11th Bn.

Born at Goulburn NSW, Methodist. Enlisted 9 January 1917 age 30, loco driver. Nok wife, Catherine Alice Hackfath, Midland Junction. Embarked at Fremantle 29 January 1917 per Miltiades. In France May 1917. On 15 March 1918 he earned the Distinguished Conduct Medal. RTA May 1919. In later years he resided at 36 Brighton St, Cottesloe. RSL. The citation for the DCM reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a hostile attack on an ammunition depot a bomb was dropped on a wagon loaded with shells which was set on fire and he at once got into the truck and extinguished the fire. His gallant conduct undoubtedly saved the ammunition. Service medals: BWM and VM.
