Born at North Fremantle, WA, Methodist. Enlisted 12 January 1916 age 22, shunter. Nok father, Isaac Helliwell of P.O Gosnells, WA. Embarked at Fremantle 6 June 1916 per Suevic. Served in France 1916-1918 and was thrice wounded, the first to the shoulder on 3-6 November 1916, the second to the arm 1 June 1918 and the third again to the arm 2 September 1918. RTA December 1918 per Leicestershire. Service medals: BWM and VM. Citation for his Mention in Despatches, France 1 June 1918: ‘Congratulated for gallant conduct at 1.45am 1 June 1918 a hostile aeroplane bomb was dropped wounding and killing a number of men and without thought of his own condition, he attended the dressing of wounds of those about him and would not cease his labours or have his own wounds dressed till all others had been done.’
