Born North Fitzroy, Victoria, Methodist. Enlisted 8 March 1915 age 22, clerk. Nok father, George William Hill of Salvado St, Cottesloe Beach. Embarked at Sydney 16 June 1915 A63 Karoola (elsewhere given as embarked Fremantle 17 January 1916 A30 Borda). Served at Gallipoli where he was seriously wounded with an eye injury and invalided to England but at Malta he was transferred to St Andrews Hospital suffering dysentery. When he recovered he continued the voyage to England per the ship Brasill where he was admitted to King George Hospital, Abbey Wood, SE of London. Upon discharge from hospital, he was assigned to Burtford Depot and served out the war with the Army Postal Corp. While serving in England he met and married Margaret who came to Fremantle on one of the first war bride ships. Herbert RTA per transport, D 17 and was discharged on 12 November 1918. Service medals 1914-15 Star, BWM and VM. Herbert Hill died on 6 March 1945 and in 1967 his widow, Margaret Hill, was at Broome St, Cottesloe. Herbert was the brother of William John Hill.
