Born at Prahran, Melbourne, Methodist. Enlisted 18 January 1915 age 22 years, labourer. Nok parents, Francis Robert Hungerford and Maria Pomeroy Hungerford, Burnt Oak Farm, Arthur River via Wagin W.A. and later at Kellerberrin. Their address in 1921 was 88 Beaufort St, Perth and in 1922 at Florence St, Cottesloe. Embarked at Fremantle 19 April 1915 per Argyllshire. While serving at Gallipoli he was reported ‘missing presumed dead’. Statements varied and the one generally accepted is he was killed on the morning of 31 July by machine gun fire and shrapnel at Shrapnel Green, which would become known as Leane’s Post or Trench. He was tripped up by barbed wire about 10 yards outside the trench and his riddled body was recovered the following afternoon and buried. Service medals: 1914-1915 Star, BWM and VM.
