Born in Western Australia, Wesleyan. Enlisted at Cootamundra NSW on 26 August 1916 age 27, labourer. Nok mother, Isabella Loney of Forrest St, Cottesloe. Embarked at Sydney 9 November 1916 per A24 Benalla. Killed in action in Belgium 4 October 1917 near Menin Gate. Memorialised at Ypres (Memorial Gate) Memorial. Loney enlisted under the false name of Joseph Martyn and following his confession to his commanding officer, reverted to Loney. A letter from his mother, written from the Convalescent Home at Cottesloe on 24 May 1921, told of her husband’s mistreatment of her and her children adding, ‘If he [husband] is alive he is in no way entitled to wear medals belonging to my son from the unfaithful and cruel way he treated myself and my other two sons.
