Born at Launceston Tasmania, Presbyterian. Enlisted 13 March 1916 age 23, insurance clerk. Nok father, Robert Shaw Mitchell Paton of Harry St, Cottesloe. At the time of his enlistment James’ address was c/- Mrs Bennett of Loma St, Cottesloe and his mother, Agnes Paton, was also at Loma St, Cottesloe. He enlisted as a private in March. Promoted to corporal and then to sergeant on the same day in May 1916 and to 2nd Lieut the following month. That is: from Private to officer in two months. Embarked ex Fremantle 29 June 1917 per A30 Borda. In France December 1917. RTA January 1920. Service medals: BWM and VM.
