Born at Sebastopol, Victoria, RC. Enlisted 10 April 1916 age 31, boot maker. Nok wife, Clarice Emma Rose, Stewart St Maylands. Embarked at Fremantle10 October 1916 per A23 Suffolk. Wounded in France on 24 April 1918. Awarded the Military Medal. RTA per Konigin Luise 21 January 1919. Later residing at Lyon St, Cottesloe. Citation: ‘In a counter-attack by his Battalion on strong enemy positions South of Villers-Bretonneux on night of 24th/25th April 1918 this man, when the advance of his platoon was held up by a belt of wire entanglement went forward under heavy rifle and machine gun fire and cut a passage through the wire. While doing so he was wounded, but carried on until he had completed his work. By his gallant action the platoon was enabled to continue the advance.’ Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No.15, 4 February 1919. Award and service medals: MM, BWM and VM.
