Born at Beachport Sth Aust. Congregational. Enlisted 16 August 1916 age 20, clerk. Nok mother, Florence Rossell, 186 Lefroy Rd, Beaconsfield. Embarked at Sydney on 26 November 1916 per A72 Beltana. Wounded in action in France on 29 April 1918 and on a second occasion gas wounded on 7 October 1918. RTA A64 Demosthenes January 1919.  File has a letter from William’s mother dated 30 October 1918 giving her address as 73 Ocean Road, Cottesloe Beach, and there is a letter of enquiry from a Miss J Wigmore, School-house, Beaconsfield, Fremantle, dated 20th May 1918. Service medals: BMW and VM.
