Salmond, Frederick Christian

** DCM 137 Sgt 10th Light Horse.

Born Tenterfield NSW RC. Enlisted 19 October 1914 age 43, farrier. Nok wife, residing at Napier St, Cottesloe. Embarked at Fremantle 11 February 1915 per A47 Mashobra. Served in the Middle East, wounded in action 10 December 1917 and dangerously ill. RTA per A 38 Ulysses for discharge 15 February 1918. Service medals: DCM, BWM and VM. Awarded Distinguished Medal for gallantry in the field. He died 2 March 1947. Citation: ‘Awarded the DCM for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty acting as troop leader in an important reconnaissance his troop was heavily attacked by a strong enemy force. Realising that it was essential to hold his ground, he took up a position of great tactical advantage and though subject to heavy shell, machine gun and rifle fire, he held his ground for five hours until the remained of his squadron returned. He displayed marked initiative and gallantry and determination.’ London Gazette Supplement No. 30664 1 May 1918.  Honour Roll Ancient Order of Druids Acorn Lodge 463 Cottesloe.
