Born at Perth WA, Presbyterian. Enlisted 17 August 1914 age 20 wool classer. Nok father, William J. Smith, Cnr Otway Cres. and Franklin St, Claremont. Embarked at Fremantle 29 June 1915 per A11 Ascanius. Served at Gallipoli and wounded in back in May 1915. Rejoined his unit and later in England with Army Pay Corp, In France 1917 and killed in action in Belgium 20 September 1917. His will left all to his younger brother Glanville for his education. His mother, Adelaide Annie Margaret Smith, living at Cottesloe received 40 shillings per fortnight pension. His effects sent per A36 Boonah from London were: 1 wallet with photos and papers, 2 books, 1 tobacco pouch, 2 housewives, I jack knife, 1 razor, 1 comb, 2 leather purses, 3 coins, 3 pair socks, balaclava cap, 2 brushes, 1 shaving brush, 1 pipe, 5 handkerchiefs, 1 scarf, 1 cap, 1 wristlet watch, 5 collars, 2 ties, 1 pair rubber shoes, 1 Sam Brown belt, 1 pair brown boots, 2 suits pyjamas, 2 towels, 1 singlet, 4 shirts, 1 SD tunic, 1 trench coat and 1 sleeping bag.
