Born at Maryborough, Victoria, CoE. Enlisted 24 February 1916 age 41, labourer. Nok sister, Mrs Nellie Williams, 38 Chaucer St, St Kilda, Victoria. Ernest’s address at time of enlistment was Nairn St, Fremantle. Departed Fremantle 9 August 1916 per A28 Miltiades. Killed in action in Belgium 4 October 1917. Memorial site: Menin Gate Memorial. His service medals were willed as follows the Victory Medal to his sister and the British War Medal and Memorial scroll to Miss Doris Fielder of Bondi, in trust for Ernest Wallace Smith (his ex nuptial son).
